Elementary Teaching Essentials Bonus Items

The following items are included in your Teaching Essentials to provide you with some extra options and features for some of the lessons. From time to time an item is referenced in the lesson text for the teacher. The ideas and suggestions listed below are in addition to those and are meant to be a springboard for your own creativity in the classroom. Please give us some feedback as to how you use these items in your lessons. We want to hear from you. Happy teaching!

Attendance Chart

Use this chart to help track attendance in your class. Encourage the students to come every week and even bring a friend. Mark the chart and consider rewarding the students for every five marks by their names.

Inflatable Hammer

Use this bonus item along with the weekly add-on. Allow the students to pretend to build the wall with the hammer. Pass it around as you play music. When the music stops, encourage the student either to say the memory verse or tell one fact from the lesson. Pass the hammer around and encourage the students to tell ways to build their relationship with God and make it stronger. Use a permanent marker to write on the hammer the words and phrases from the block added each week. Review them each week before adding the current week’s words.

Drawstring Bag

Use the bag to collect the offering each week. Another option would be to use it anytime a bag or basket is needed for an activity. Have students write down any prayer requests on index cards as they enter the classroom and place them inside the drawstring bag. Pull them out during prayer time and share the requests with the class. Allow good listeners and participators to write their names on small slips of paper during class and place them inside the bag. At the end of class, choose a name from the bag and give that student a small prize (pencil, snack-size piece of candy, small pack of gum, etc.).

Queen Duck

Use this duck during the Esther story. Have students sit in a circle and toss the duck to different students. When the duck is tossed to someone, the person must share what he or she thinks God’s purpose is for his or her life. Another option is to share a way he or she has demonstrated leadership this past week. Hide the duck and allow the students to search for it. When the duck is found, have the class say the memory verse aloud.

Cross Miniature Stickers

Use these stickers on the attendance chart or to mark a special effort on Discovery Sheets.

Poster putty

Use the putty to attach individual pieces to the poster or board as needed.  Encourage the students to help place the pieces.  It only takes a little bit of putty to attach each piece.  The more you “knead” it, the stickier it becomes.

Enough putty is provided to help hang posters in the classroom.  Use the unit posters and teaching cards as decorations in the room and review centers with which the students may interact.

Music CD

The CD provides music that correlates with every lesson’s theme or memory verse.  Use it to add interest and activity to the lesson times.

Play the music while the students enter the room and wait for class to begin.

Use the crown in both Unit 1 (Daniel) and Unit 3 (Esther). Allow different children to wear it to role-play and review the lessons.

Queen Duck
Use this duck during Unit 3 as a visual reminder of Esther’s purpose in being chosen queen. Hide the duck at the beginning of class and allow the children to search for it. When it is found, if the child can tell you the Heartprint or a fact from the lesson, give a small prize to him or her. Use it to play a Heartprint or memory verse review game. Have the children sit in a circle and pass the duck around as you play music. When the music stops, the child holding the duck must say the Heartprint or memory verse. Play a game of “I Spy” with the duck. Hide the duck in the room and give clues to where the duck is located. Allow children to take turns hiding the duck and repeat the activity.

Inflatable Hammer
Use this during Unit 2 as a visual to remind the children Jesus has gone to prepare a place in heaven for us. Allow the children to play with it during the CONNECT activities.
